A native of Singapore, Benjamin Loh first obtained his B.Sc. in Economics from the Wharton School of Business. Subsequently, his love for music brought him to the Manhattan School of Music, where he graduated with a Master of Music in Piano Performance as a student of Dr. Marc Silverman. Since returning to Singapore in 1988, he has successfully balanced the role of teacher and performer. Many of his students have won prizes in local and international piano competitions, and others have been High Scorers in the ABRSM and Trinity/Guildhall piano examinations. As a performer, he is often heard in chamber music concerts, and performs locally as well as abroad.
He is also very much in demand as a teacher and has given masterclasses in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Korea. In May last year, he was invited to give a talk, a masterclass and to perform at the 1st Bangkok Piano Symposium. In October last year, he conducted masterclasses at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In Korea, he has been on the faculty of the Asia International Piano Academy & Festival since 2008. In 1994, Benjamin was invited by the National Arts Council to be on their Arts Resource Panel and has sat on several of their committees: the National Piano and Violin Competition Advisory Panel, the Cultural Medallion and Young Artist Award Music Selection Panel, the Shell-NAC Arts Scholarship Selection Panel, and the Arts Bursaries Selection Committee. He has also served on the Artistic Committee of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. In 2008, he was invited to be on the International Advisory Committee of the Gwangju Jeong Yul Seong International Music Festival in Korea. In the past, he has held the post of music critic for The Straits Times and The Business Times. He has also been the Vice-President of the Singapore Music Teachers Association as well as Head of Music at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. Presently, he is on the piano faculty of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. In December 2006, he served on the International Jury of the 2nd ASEAN Chopin International Piano Competition held in Kuala Lumpur. For the past three years, he has been on the jury of the International Chopin Piano Competition in Asia, held in Tokyo. In 2005, he was given the Special Recognition Award by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) for his contributions to the music scene in Singapore. |
