A native of Singapore, Benjamin Loh first obtained his B.Sc. in Economics from the Wharton School of Business. Subsequently, his love for music brought him to the Manhattan School of Music, where he graduated with a Master of Music in Piano Performance as a student of Dr. Marc Silverman. Since returning to Singapore in 1988, he has successfully balanced the role of teacher and performer. Many of his students have won prizes in local and international piano competitions, and others have been High Scorers in the ABRSM and Trinity/Guildhall piano examinations. As a performer, he is often heard in chamber music concerts, and performs locally as well as abroad. He is also very much in demand as a teacher and has given masterclasses in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Korea. In May 2009, he was invited to give a talk, a masterclass and to perform at the 1st Bangkok Piano Symposium. In October the same year, he conducted masterclasses at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In Korea, he has been on the faculty of the Asia International Piano Academy & Festival since 2008, and for the past two years he has held the post of International Advisor of this Festival. In July 2012, he will be on the piano faculty of the Amalfi Coast Music Festival (Italy). In 1994, Benjamin was invited by the National Arts Council to be on their Arts Resource Panel and has sat on several of their committees: the National Piano and Violin Competition Advisory Panel, the Cultural Medallion and Young Artist Award Music Selection Panel, the Shell-NAC Arts Scholarship Selection Panel, and the Arts Bursaries Selection Committee. He has also served on the Artistic Committee of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. In 2008, he was invited to be on the International Advisory Committee of the Gwangju Jeong Yul Seong International Music Festival in Korea. In the past, he has held the post of music critic for The Straits Times and The Business Times. He has also been the Vice-President of the Singapore Music Teachers Association as well as Head of Music at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. Presently, he is on the piano faculty of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. In December 2006, he served on the International Jury of the 2nd ASEAN Chopin International Piano Competition held in Kuala Lumpur. For the past four years, he has been on the jury of the International Chopin Piano Competition in Asia, held in Tokyo, and last year, he was invited to judge the Piano Teachers' National Association Competition in Japan. This year, he was invited to be on the jury of the IIYM International Piano Competition in Kansas, U.S.A., and the Piano Society of Korea Competition as well as the MKI Competition - Teguh Sukaryo Music Awards 2011. In 2005, he was given the Special Recognition Award by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) for his contributions to the music scene in Singapore. |
